finding and matching volunteer donors for patients who require stem
cell transplants. Fewer than 30 per cent of patients who need stem
cell transplants find a compatible donor within their own families.
The rest rely on those who have volunteered to donate stem cells to anyone in need.

Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW) is the continuing effort to collect the HLA phenotypes
of volunteer stem cell donors and cord blood units, and is responsible for the co-ordination
of their worldwide distribution. Participants are 63 stem cell donor registries from
44 countries, and 43 cord blood banks from 26 countries.
